National Gas is today making its largest ever investment in upgraded gas compressors for three of its sites around Great Britain.
Industry Minister Sarah Jones visited the National Gas Compressor Station in Peterborough, one of three sites that will see new gas compressors installed alongside St Fergus and Wormington.
A total of over £350 million will be spent on replacing the existing compressors with new state-of-the-art equipment, which is being made by Siemens Energy, Baker Hughes and Solar Turbines, and installed with the support of our contractors United Living Infrastructure Services and Murphy.
Some of the compressors will be made at sites across Great Britain, providing a boost to the economy and supporting jobs at those sites.
The new equipment will ensure National Gas can maintain Great Britain’s energy security – using its world-class National Transmission System (NTS) to provide gas to major industries, power stations, and businesses around Great Britain – as well as supporting around 1,000 jobs here in the UK.
And it will also be future-proofed to deal with the gases of tomorrow – with the new gas compressors ready to compress blends of hydrogen, which can then be transported around the existing NTS.
