National Gas has pivotal role in the Government's Clean Power Action Plan

The Government’s Clean Power Action Plan has firmly recognised the crucial role National Gas has in both maintaining Great Britain's energy security and its future decarbonisation for decades to come.

This week, we have seen the security that a resilient National Transmission System brings, with more gas supplied to power stations than at any point in the last five years.

As the Government drives forward its ambition to decarbonise the power system by 2030, our network will be critical to supporting clean power by complementing the intermittency of renewables on days when the wind doesn't blow and the sun doesn't shine.

We’re proud to be playing such an important role in this transition, with our world-leading National Transmission System supplying large gas power stations with the secure energy needed to generate flexible power.

But our work to help Great Britain realise its energy future doesn’t stop there - with initiatives underway to transform our world-class infrastructure to create innovative, green gas alternatives which, as the Clean Power Action Plan references, can unlock the long-term delivery of clean power.

For example, our FutureGrid project at DNV Spadeadam is pioneering hydrogen transportation, having successfully tested blends from 2% to 100% using previously in service National Transmission System components.

Project Union aims to create a core hydrogen network of around 1,500 miles across Britain, as recommended by the National Infrastructure Commission, positioning our network at the forefront of clean energy infrastructure.

Our Carbon Capture and Storage project, SCO2T Connect, with the Scottish Cluster and the Acorn Project will provide flexible decarbonised power in Scotland, whilst also protecting jobs and critical industries.

We are proud to play our role in securing Britain's energy and unlocking clean power, working with government, policymakers, and industry to benefit from the resilience, reliability, and flexibility of the National Transmission System.
