RESPONSIBILITY

Diversity, Equity and Inclusion

Diversity, equity and inclusion
At National Gas, we are committed to creating an inclusive workplace where all our colleagues feel that they belong – at every level of the business.
A workplace where everyone feels welcome

We want National Gas to be a workplace that represents the communities we serve. Not only is this good for our people, our customers and our success as an organisation, it also help us to attract and retain the best talent in our industry.

What Diversity, Equity and Inclusion means to National Gas:

Diversity

Diversity means having a variety of identities, backgrounds and experiences represented and celebrated in our workplace. We recognise and value the benefits of embracing a range of expertise, perspectives, working styles and cultures – especially when it comes to decision-making. That’s why we are building a workforce that reflects the rich diversity of our society.

Equity

Equity recognises that people have different circumstances, experiences and access, which means everyone has a different ‘starting point’. We therefore need to allocate different resources and opportunities to each person, to ensure they reach an equal outcome. We want to ensure that all of our colleagues have the same opportunities to thrive in our organisation, and we are actively identifying and removing barriers to achieve this.

Inclusion

Inclusion means that everyone’s thoughts, ideas and perspectives matter, so that people feel safe and able to be themselves at work. Belonging comes from inclusion, where colleagues feel accepted and celebrated within the workplace and connected with the organisation. We want all our colleagues to feel that they belong at National Gas. That’s why we’re taking meaningful action through our Belonging Strategy.

Belonging Strategy – our aspirations:

  • We champion diversity and inclusivity so that everyone feels valued and appreciated.
  • We recruit and retain diverse talent, we invest in diverse leadership, and we prioritise initiatives that support inclusive behaviours.
  • Everyone knows their roles and responsibilities in creating an inclusive culture.
  • We measure our progress so that we can continue to improve. We are clear about our successes and opportunities to make a difference.
  • We raise awareness through education and learning by continuing to expand knowledge and awareness of DEI.
  • We connect with our customers and communities on programmes that support our DEI aspirations.

Inclusion at work

We have established a number of groups and initiatives that support and promote Diversity, Equity and Inclusion in our workplaces – helping to turn our aspirations into reality.

National Gas Belonging Forum

This group of passionate and dedicated colleagues work collaboratively to improve diversity, equity and inclusion. Its members are representatives from each area of the business who provide insight, support and advice based on their knowledge and experience of the National Gas Belonging Strategy. They champion and support DEI actions in their areas of the business, and support the development of appropriate policies, strategies and projects.

New Employee Opportunities Network (NEON)

NEON is an employee-led resource group that aims to support new colleagues joining National Gas, as well as promoting a positive experience for existing employees. The group provides resources and guidance to help employees settle in to their new roles. NEON also organises events to support career development, knowledge-sharing and collaboration across the business. The group supports employees at all stages of their careers, and creates an environment where colleagues can socialise, make new friends and have fun!
