National Gas Hosts Parliamentary Roundtable with Andrew Pakes MP

National Gas recently partnered with the MP for Peterborough Andrew Pakes to host a parliamentary roundtable focused on developing green skills in Peterborough and across the country. The event brought together MPs, industry leaders, and education specialists to explore how we can support the net zero transition while securing jobs and ensuring economic prosperity in the region.

Peterborough holds significance for National Gas as it’s home to one of our Gas Compressor sites, a critical hub in our gas National Transmission System. Operating 24/7 with a team of around 20 skilled professionals, the site exemplifies the kind of infrastructure and expertise that will be vital in our transition to a greener future.

The discussion centred on three key themes: the role of apprenticeships in addressing the green skills gap, pathways to clean power, and educational opportunities in the energy transition. As part of National Apprenticeship Week, the timing highlighted our commitment to developing the next generation of energy sector professionals.

Looking ahead, National Gas continues to advocate for policies that will support the green skills transition, including:

  • Better alignment of the Growth and Skills Levy with the Industrial Strategy
  • Enhanced resourcing for critical public sector institutions
  • Skilled Worker visa routes that support our developing workforce needs

Jake Tudge, Corporate Affairs Director, National Gas, said:

“It was a delight to have such an insightful discussion about how important green skills are – and the steps needed from government and industry to plug the gap and power the green economy.

“Collaborations between politicians and industry are essential in solving the current challenges with net zero and the skills gap, while bolstering our valuable workforce.

“I want to thank Andrew for his leadership in particular on this area, as well as those who came along to drive the conversation.”

The success of this event reinforces our commitment to working with government and local stakeholders to ensure Britain's energy infrastructure and workforce are ready for the challenges and opportunities of the net zero transition.
