We were honoured to welcome Charlotte Nichols, MP for Warrington North, to our Warrington site, accompanied by our CEO, Jon Butterworth. This visit marked a follow-up to her initial tour in 2020, offering a chance to showcase the progress we’ve made in investing in the region, which in turn boosts energy resilience, supply security, job creation—including green jobs—and economic development.

The Warrington Compressor Station, commissioned in 1985, has entered an exciting phase of refurbishment and repurposing. Though the two compressor units have been decommissioned, they remain on-site as we repurpose as much equipment as possible to serve critical needs for the National Transmission System (NTS). Notably, some of the equipment and pipework will be transferred to our FutureGrid hydrogen research facility in Cumbria, contributing to the construction of a new compressor unit and advancing hydrogen innovation.

Warrington continues to serve as a vital operational gas hub, supporting 30 smaller sites and acting as a regional training centre. Current refurbishment efforts, including upgrades to the control building, are already underway and expected to reach Phase 1 completion in early 2025.

Looking ahead, we shared our plans to build a core hydrogen network across Britain, with Warrington set to play a key role through training initiatives and potential re-commissioning. This will support the transition from the existing network to a hydrogen-based system, aligning with the government's net zero and clean energy goals.

Together, we are working towards a more resilient, secure and sustainable energy future.
