Carlisle MP Julie Minns visits our world-leading FutureGrid facility

National Gas welcomed Julie Minns, the MP for Carlisle and a member of the Energy Security and Net Zero Committee, to our groundbreaking FutureGrid facility at DNV Spadeadam, where we're leading critical research into the UK's transition to hydrogen energy.

The facility, which uses largely decommissioned parts of our National Transmission System (NTS), is a global-first for testing hydrogen transportation.

FutureGrid is using real-world assets to run hydrogen through an isolated section of a gas transmission network, demonstrating a 2% blend of hydrogen all the way to 100% hydrogen.

Having completed Phase 1, the project is now in Phase 2, during which we will be testing the compression and deblending of transporting hydrogen.

During the visit, our team demonstrated how this micro-transmission network allows us to conduct extensive safety and operational tests in a controlled setting, replicating real-world conditions of our NTS.

FutureGrid represents a vital step in our journey towards net zero, enabling us to develop robust safety standards and operational processes for a future hydrogen network, namely informing the development and design of Project Union.

The insights gained here will be instrumental in supporting the UK's transition from natural gas to hydrogen.

Thank you to Julie Minns MP for visiting, and the teams at National Gas and DNV involved in making this visit a success.
