Minister Shanks visits National Gas St Fergus site

Minister Shanks visits National Gas St Fergus site

We had the honour of welcoming Minister Michael Shanks from the Department for Energy Security and Net Zero (DESNZ) to our St Fergus gas terminal. He was accompanied by National Gas colleagues Corinna Jones, Nick Sides, Jake Tudge and our fantastic on site team who facilitated a great visit. The visit highlighted the essential role St Fergus plays in securing Great Britain’s energy security and advancing our transition to deliver a decarbonised future.

As one of the key nodes in ensuring Britain’s energy resilience, St Fergus handles between 25% and 50% of the UK’s gas supplies, operating 24 hours a day, 365 days a year, to ensure energy security for millions of homes and businesses. It is also central to the efforts of National Gas to achieve net zero by facilitating both CCS and hydrogen infrastructure projects.

In the SCO₂T Connect project, it serves as the key transfer point for CO₂ from industrial emitters and power stations across Scotland to the Acorn Project, using repurposed pipelines for efficient CO₂ transport and storage, reducing emissions and protecting jobs.

For Project Union, St Fergus will connect Scotland’s low-carbon hydrogen production to key UK industrial hubs and Europe, creating a 1,500-mile hydrogen network that supports large-scale storage, industrial decarbonisation and clean power.

Together, we engaged in in-depth discussions around the infrastructure’s strategic importance in supporting CCS and hydrogen initiatives, and our collective commitment to Clean Power and Net Zero.

Minister Shanks’s visit provided a valuable opportunity to delve into how St Fergus supports our hydrogen and decarbonisation strategies, with an emphasis on innovation, sustainability and resilience. We thank the Minister for engaging with us and supporting our mission to build a cleaner energy future.
