New Milestone: VIDA’s Glentham Biomethane Facility Successfully Connects to Our National Transmission System

VIDA’s Glentham Biomethane Facility Successfully Connects to Our National Transmission System

Our gas National Transmission System (NTS) has just welcomed its newest biomethane connection from VIDA bioenergy.

VIDA bioenergy is a Dutch company, owned by VTTI, that is set to become one of Europe’s leading biomethane producers, with operations and projects underway in the Netherlands, UK and Poland. It has now successfully injected biomethane into our gas NTS.

VIDA began construction on its facility in Glentham, Lincolnshire, in June 2023, to process locally sourced organic waste streams, including agricultural by-products such as straw, chicken manure and potato waste, to turn into biomethane gas. It also uses sequential crops grown as part of sustainable farming rotations, demonstrating how the different sectors of energy and agriculture can work together to reach net zero.

The facility, which is connected to our gas NTS, will double the biomethane output from National Gas to over 120 GWh annually.

This collaboration with VIDA bioenergy represents another important milestone in our ongoing commitment to supporting the transition to cleaner energy across Great Britain. We’re committed to working with partners across the industry and throughout Europe as we build a green, diverse energy system that powers industry and keeps the lights on.

Chief Commercial Officer at National Gas, Ian Radley, said:

“As we decarbonise the network, a diverse range of green gases like biomethane and hydrogen will be critical to reaching net zero, while ensuring power stations, industries and homes continue to get the energy they need.

“We are proud to share this partnership with VIDA Energy, which has seen us successfully inject biomethane from its facility into the gas National Transmission System – the plant will double our current biomethane output onto the NTS, helping deliver over 120GWh of biomethane annually.

“Today’s news moves us one step closer to a low-carbon energy future and will pave the way for future projects that support this transition.”
