SYSTEM OPERATION

Safety Monitors

Safety Monitors define the levels of gas storage that must be maintained across the country through the winter period. They set out how much gas must be held in storage to manage a supply loss situation.

The focus of the Safety Monitors is public safety, rather than security of supply. If storage volumes fall below the Safety Monitor levels, a mechanism for taking direct action is triggered to avoid a potential National Gas Supply Emergency (NGSE) (as defined in the Gas Safety (Management) Regulations).

The daily Margins Notice and Safety Monitor position update report is published below following the 13:00 demand forecast.
