People and Culture

People and Culture
National Gas Metering is a people-powered business with a clear purpose. We are committed to balancing the needs of the business with the needs of colleagues, so that together we deliver an exceptional service for our customers, partners and stakeholders.

Our business is responsible for maintaining and managing millions of gas meters across the UK, meaning millions of customers rely on our services. We understand that a happy, motivated workforce will always deliver the best service for those customers, which is why we value the individual skills, contribution and wellbeing of every colleague.

There are many ways we support and champion our people, from our agile business model and flexible working practices to engagement and community initiatives designed to promote wellbeing and empowerment.

Our purpose and values

Our purpose is to lead a clean energy future for everyone. To help us achieve that, we have established a workplace culture that is purposeful, people-driven and results-orientated. We are guided in everything we do by three clear values:

The output categories are:

  • Ownership: Recognising we’re all responsible for success and can share in the benefits.
  • Simplicity: Making sure we don’t over-complicate things when they can be simple, with safety always paramount.
  • Progress: Keeping our eyes firmly on moving forward, taking accountability and making decisions in an agile way.

Flexible ways of working

Our colleagues can choose whether to work remotely, in the office, or a hybrid of the two. By offering flexible working hours, we give employees the chance to balance their working life with other commitments and interests.

Our flexible working model helps us to attract and retain more diverse talent from a wider pool, unrestricted by location or working hours. It also enables us to provide better opportunities for working care-givers who need more flexibility.

How we value our people

We encourage a culture where our people feel both seen and heard. It’s important to us that people feel confident that their ideas will be listened to, their needs will be recognised, and that they can bring their “whole selves” to work.

The mental and physical wellbeing of our people is one of our top priorities. We offer a range of wellbeing initiatives to help colleagues understand how to maintain healthy minds and bodies. We also provide learning tools and training opportunities to help colleagues develop their talents and build new skills.

Ceri Miles, Asset Lifecycle Specialist

“I feel proud to work for such a nationally renowned company working at the forefront of innovation, particularly in hydrogen. I really appreciate the flexible working arrangements, which are especially valuable in helping me achieve a work-life balance as a parent.”

Paul Petty, Business Development Manager

“The heritage of National Gas Metering and its extensive engineering capabilities really attracted me to the company. It’s great to work for a business playing such a pivotal role in gas transmission and metering in the UK. The company benefits are excellent too, particularly the pension contribution of up to 12%, which is far better that most industry peers.”
