National Gas publishes Gas Winter Outlook 2024

National Gas has today (Tuesday, 8th October 2024) published its Gas Winter Outlook 2024 report, presenting its view of peak demand, supply capability, and key considerations for the upcoming winter season.

At National Gas, we're committed to securing Great Britain’s energy through every season – keeping the lights on and industries fuelled. Today, we share our Gas Winter Outlook 2024 report, offering insights into the readiness of our gas system for the coming winter.

As we look ahead, we're pleased to report that our gas demand forecast remains stable, mirroring last year's levels. This stability, coupled with our diverse and flexible supply sources — including the UK Continental Shelf (UKCS), Norway, LNG (liquefied natural gas) imports, and interconnectors with Belgium and the Netherlands — positions us well to meet the nation's forecasted energy needs.

Gas continues to play a crucial role in our energy mix, especially during peak demand periods. Last year, for example, gas provided more than 50% of electricity between 29 November and 2 December, and peaked at 61% on 30 November. This underscores the importance of gas in complementing renewable energy and ensuring a resilient power supply.

Ian Radley, System Operations Director at National Gas, said:

“As we approach winter, we have confidence in the country’s diversity of supply options and the capability of our network to meet peak demand.

“We will continue collaborating with industry and government to enhance energy resilience through careful monitoring and management of gas supply and demand.

“We are fully committed to the government's net zero targets and our network can play a leading role in delivering cutting-edge technologies like low carbon hydrogen and carbon capture.”
