Compressor stations

National Gas owns and operates more than 60 compressor units at 21 compressor stations around Great Britain.

Compressor stations are located at intervals along the National Transmission System (NTS) pipelines. They play a vital role in maintaining the flow of gas through the pipes.

Each compressor station comprises two or more compressor units (jet engines). They pressurise and direct gas through the NTS, keeping the gas moving at speeds of up to 25 mph (40 km/h). The NTS is the only national gas system in Great Britain with compression.
