Hydrogen skills and competencies

Skills and Competencies

We’re running a project to develop methodologies for both skills training and hydrogen competencies for the UK gas industry.

We’re focusing on proving the capability of the National Transmission System (NTS) to transport hydrogen, using the existing assets on our network. Before we can make this transition, we need to ensure we develop the required skills and competencies within our business.

We’re running a project to develop methodologies for both skills training and hydrogen competencies for the UK gas industry.

Work has already been undertaken through the Hy4Heat programme to develop a hydrogen competence framework. This forms a baseline for the activities undertaken in this project.

We’re reviewing the current skills and competence landscape, to identify any gaps for a hydrogen transition.

The project also seeks to address the training that is required, whether existing courses can be adapted or if new ones are needed, and whether existing tools and techniques are relevant for a UK hydrogen network.

Once completed, the project will give us a standardised set of training specifications for the development of the required skills and competencies, including who should receive training and what the course content and assessment process should look like.  Alongside this, will be the creation of a roadmap that outlines when and how this training should be delivered and what the overall cost might be. This will ensure the safe use of hydrogen within the gas network.
