How National Gas is fast-tracking Scotland’s energy transition

National Gas was awarded funding from the Scottish Government for the SCO2T Connect project, a groundbreaking initiative aimed at advancing Carbon Capture and Storage (CCS) in Scotland.

Our Corporate Affairs Director, Jake Tudge, and Head of Business Development, Luke Rowlands, met with First Minister Rt Hon John Swinney MSP at the Shell St Fergus site to discuss this project. The meeting included representatives from the Scottish Government, the Scottish Cluster, the Acorn Project, and key industry partners.

The SCO2T Connect project focuses on the development of an onshore pipeline designed to transport carbon dioxide from major industrial sites in Scotland to a permanent geological storage facility located under the North Sea.

We are excited to partner with the First Minister, the Scottish Government, the Scottish Cluster, the Acorn Project Advisory, Storegga, Shell UK, Harbour Energy, North Sea Midstream Partners, INEOS, SSE Thermal, and the Department for Energy Security and Net Zero on this initiative. The SCO2T Connect project has the potential to become the largest onshore carbon dioxide pipeline in Great Britain and possibly Europe, marking a significant achievement in the realm of CCS technology.

CEO of National Gas, Jon Butterworth, said:

"We are committed to reaching net zero, and excited to explore how our world-class gas network can be at the heart of the drive to decarbonise with carbon capture and storage.
“We welcome today’s announcement from the Scottish Government. It is a brilliant example of how government and industry can work side-by-side to deliver clean energy solutions.”
