Case Study 1: Vehicle collision damage

The Emergency

National Gas Services received an early morning call from one of its customers about a car that had lost control and collided with pipework on a high-pressure (HP) Above Ground Installation (AGI). The vehicle had breached the outer wooden fence, the main galvanised steel perimeter fence and into the HP pipework and Pipeline Inspection Gauge (PIG) trap valve.  The immediate concerns where for the wellbeing of the driver, who was taken away by emergency services. Following this, an emergency plan was implemented between National Gas Services and the client to assess the pipework integrity.

The Solution

We several mechanical defects that needed to be addressed. Sealant points had also been sheared off the PIG trap valve. An inspector from the NGS North attended the site to assess and classify the damage, which involved P11 inspections, Magnetic Particle Inspection (MPI) and other Non-Destructive Testing (NDT) methods on welds. Following this, further isolations were put in place to remediate the damaged PIG trap valve.
