Pipeline breach

Pipeline breach

The Emergency

A fencing contractor had been working on farmland in Elgin, without having the area scanned and marked for utilities. They didn’t realise they were working directly above a 12-inch cast iron medium-pressure gas main. Unfortunately, one of the fence posts was driven straight through the pipeline, resulting in a 3-inch hole and a high-volume gas escape releasing at 1.8 bars of pressure.

The Solution

National Gas Services promptly headed to Elgin with the necessary materials and equipment. We employed a double stopple flow stop method on the 12-inch main to halt the gas flow, installing supa tees, valves and drilling to size. Flexible bypass hoses were used to establish a 30-metre bypass around the damaged area. Subsequently, cold cuts were performed to remove the damaged section, enabling SGN to undertake the necessary remedial work.

Customer Feedback

“The guys were brilliant! Helpful, patient and professional.  They even took the time to give an explanation of how stopples work and show the newer engineers and managers. Everything went perfectly, a well-oiled machine and I can only thank yourself and the engineers. I have now worked with this team several times in the last few months and each time the jobs have gone well. These guys are competent and know exactly what they are doing and know what it takes to get the job done.”
