Our Data

Digitalisation strategy

Data and digitalisation are key enablers for delivering value to our customers, operating a safe and efficient national energy network, and unlocking the benefits of the energy transition.

Our digitalisation strategy and action plan

This is an exciting time for the energy sector as we decarbonise and decentralise our energy system. Through digitalisation, we can improve the customer experience, enable greater whole system coordination and transparency, and accelerate the development and deployment of innovative technologies. Take a look at our latest Digitalisation Strategy below. It outlines where we are today, our future strategy and our priorities.

Our data strategy

Data is crucial to every area of our business. That’s why we have a robust and comprehensive data strategy that aims to embed best practices in the way data is used and managed across our organisation. We want to ensure that our data is fit for purpose, high quality and made available to the people and systems that need it.

As technology advances, we are continuously reviewing and creating data controls and assurance processes to ensure we protect our data. We are working to support our industry partners and fulfil our regulatory obligations, set by Ofgem. As an essential national service provider, we’re also engaging with government and security experts to protect our data assets.

  • Enabling meaningful data interactions
We want to unlock the value of our data by implementing appropriate controls – giving people access to the data they need in the right place at the right time. We are improving the experience for users by making data easier to find and understand. That means people spend less time extracting data and more time gaining insights from it to support decision-making.

  • Building our data capabilities
Our Data Strategy team is constantly assessing future capability requirements and developing plans to implement them. We’re also implementing the latest information and data techniques and technologies to enable more sophisticated use of data.

To help our business gain maximum value from data, we promote data literacy and share best practice among our teams through learning and development programmes. That ensures we embed the skills we need across our data-driven organisation.

  • Adding value for our customers
We’re always seeking efficiencies that improve value for money for our customers. By developing industry-leading automated solutions, we are going beyond our basic compliance requirements. We use data-driven analysis to prove that our RIIO obligations benefit consumers, and that we are meeting those obligations.

  • Preparing for a clean energy future
Looking ahead, we are now designing data solutions to help us face the challenges of net-zero, digital construction, hydrogen transmission and the evolution of the energy networks.

Data strategy principles

  • Ensuring that data is owned – so that people have accountability for maintaining it.
  • Ensuring that data is accurate and trusted – so that it’s an asset to our business.
  • Keeping data secure and compliant – to protect our business and avoid financial penalties.
  • Recognising the value of data – for the safe and effective running of our essential service.
